Nombre del Curso:
OSD 421 Basic Geophysical Surveying

Propósito:
The course covers a wide range of topics, ranging from an introduction to oil and gas and the oil industry, the basic objectives and design of various geophysical surveys (e.g. site surveys, pipeline and infrastructure surveys etc…). The course also covers an introduction to underwater acoustics, and details the design and operation of common geophysical acquisition systems: Side scan sonars, sub-bottom profilers, multibeam and single-beam sonars and magnetometers.

Ubicación:
This course can be provided regionally. Courses are offered subject to trainer availability and operational commitments.

Contenido del Curso:
• An introduction to Oil and Gas – The chemistry of hydrocarbons, a history of the oil industry, and an introduction to oil geology.
• Drilling for Oil – An introduction to oil drilling, field infrastructure, and a discussion of our client objectives – why are we doing these surveys and what do our clients want out of them.
• An introduction to underwater acoustics – the science behind geophysical survey methods, including sound propagation, noise and artifacts in the marine environment.
• Seismic Exploration – Howe the seismic reflection method works, seismic survey equipment and design, and data examples.
• Hydrograhpic and Geophysical Survey – Objectives and survey design of shallow geophysical (analogue) surveys.
• Sub-bottom Profilers – Types of sub-bottom profilers, survey objectives, survey operation and an introduction to interpretation of shallow geophysical data.
• Side-scan Sonar – Side scan sonar design, survey objectives and operation, and an introduction to interpretation of side-scan sonar records.
• Magnetics – A brief introduction to magnetic theory, the design and operation of magnetometers and gradiometers, design and considerations in magnetic surveys, and a brief introduction to interpretation of magnetic data.
• Marine sedimentation – An introduction to marine sedimentology, including the various depositional environments, the origin and transport of sediments, the effect of changing marine environments over time (e.g. sea-level changes) and what this means for interpretation of geophysical data.

Resultado del Curso y Objetivos:
Upon completion of the course, delegates should have a good understanding of the offshore survey industry including client objectives and operations, as well as marine geology and geophysical survey theory, methods, equipment and data.
