Propósito:
To build capacity and recognize cartographers for their capabilities and efforts through a CAT B certificate program in approved by the International Board for Standards of Competence for Hydrographic Surveyors and Nautical Cartographers

Pre-requisitos:
Minimum requirements are a formal internationally-recognized Bachelor's degree in Engineering or natural sciences that include GIS, remote sensing and at least six credits of math. Transcripts must be in English and may require the student to take a TOEFL/ IELTS/ PTE in order to show proficiency in spoken and written English.

Proceso de Registración:
Applicants to the program will be required to submit:

1. One or two-page resume showing employment and academic history

2. Transcripts that document academic accomplishments 

3. Personal statement with an emphasis on: 

-a). Reason for wanting an IHO S-8 CAT-B Certificate in Nautical Cartography 
-b). Number of years and months worked in Nautical Cartography 
-c). The types of Nautical Cartography activities the applicant has experience in 

4. A letters of recommendation from the direct supervisor supporting the applicant’s capabilities and experience to be in the program and successfully graduate. After approved by the NOAA committee, the applicants will need also to apply through the University of Maryland, College Park graduate school for a GIS certificate. 

Costo:
The anticipated costs for next year’s tuition and associated fees are around $10,000 for UMD. Other costs to consider are lodging, food, and health insurance costs in the DC area.

Nombre del Curso:
Chart Adequacy Workshop

Propósito:
1) To develop a chart adequacy assessment procedure using automatic-identification system (AIS) data and satellite-derived bathymetry (SDB). The procedure will be low cost and could be readily applied by Hydrographic Offices worldwide; 

2) To train an international group of hydrographers; and 3) Replicate the NOAA Chart Adequacy procedure internationally.

The selection of applicants is based on: 
- a). Previous experience in ocean bathymetry (minimum two years in hydrography or cartography).
- b). Nominee’s verbal and literary ability in English. 
- c). Experience in chart production. 
- d). Future opportunities to work on bathymetric projects and the likelihood of the nominee continuing to work in related subjects. 
- e). Personal motivation.
