Training Opportunity Available:

Hydrographic field experience specifically related to emergency response and post-hurricane surveys.

Description of Training:

The trainee (who must be a trained hydrographer to participate) will be assigned to the two Navigation Response Teams (NRT) located in Florida and the Gulf of Mexico for a period of two months during the most active part of hurricane season (August – November). The trainee will work alongside NRTs with all hydrographic activities related to emergency response situations and post-hurricane surveys. The purpose of these surveys is to ensure ship channels are clear and safe for commercial ship traffic into major ports following extreme weather conditions that could result in shoaling or navigational obstructions. Trainee and NRT will coordinate with other NOAA units, other US Government Agencies (such as Coast Guard and US Army Corps of Engineers), and port authorities to determine needs and priorities. May include some potentially hazardous conditions.

Prerequisites:

▪     Must have a very good command of the English language

▪     Must be a trained hydrographer who can work alongside the NRT members and contribute as well as learn.

▪     Must know how to use side-scan sonar; knowledge of multibeam is desirable.
▪     Must know small boat handling, especially in rough seas.
